NRC likely to be enforced in Manipur

IMPHAL, 27 Aug'22:  CHIEF Minister N Biren Singh has reportedly assured members of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and the United Naga Council (UNC) to forward the resolution adopted by the Manipur Legislative Assembly for enforcing National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state within three or four days.

COCOMI coordinator Longjam Ratankumar said that members of COCOMI along with the UNC called on the Chief Minister on Friday to seek the status of the resolution adopted by the house.

Members of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 5 had unanimously adopted a resolution to work for implementation of NRC and to set up a state population commission to check the demographic imbalance caused by influx of illegal immigrants.

Thangmeiband constituency MLA Kh Joykisan had moved the private member's resolution during the last sitting of the full budget session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Ratankumar further said that during the meeting, which went for about an hour, the CM assured them that the resolution will be forwarded along with a proposal to the Centre to implement NRC.

He further said that CM Biren highlighted them about the steps being taken by the home department to forward the proposal. Besides, it was also informed that the government has started consultations for instituting the state population commission, he added.

It may be mentioned here that COCOMI and UNC and several other bodies including JCILPS had raised concern over the threats towards the indigenes by the influx of illegal immigrants.
