CSC on Naga talks studying demand for separate flag & constitution
1st December 2022
THERE is some ray of hope in the Naga peace process as the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Naga peace talks is reportedly studying pros and cons of a separate flag and constitution for the Nagas.
The Union Government and the key player in the current peace process, the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN), are tight-lipped on the status of the ongoing talks in New Delhi, but according a source, the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Naga peace talks is currently studying the pros and cons of NSCN demand for a separate flag and constitution. The committee includes, among others, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister.
NSCN team, led by general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah, is in the national capital having closed-door parleys with the Centre’s team headed by interlocutor AK Mishra.
After the matter was elevated to the Cabinet Sub-Committee, the Naga team was also having a regular meeting among themselves.
The Central Government was in hurry to ink the agreement with the NSCN before the general election in Nagaland but due to NSCN’s rigid stand on flag and constitution, deadlock remains.
All outstanding issues have been reportedly resolved except flag and constitution, according to the Government of India and NSCN.
But emerging issues like the demand for Frontier Nagaland State could delay the agreement. Reports are doing the round that the Centre and NSCN have agreed for territorial autonomous council for Nagas of outside Nagaland.
