Naga Sweet Cucumber Gets Geographical Indication Tag

Kohima, Sep'24,021: THE Naga Cucumber, known for its sweetness has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, under agricultural products of the Geographical Indications of Goods
(Registration & Protection) Act of 1999.
Informing on this, Advisor to Department of Horticulture and Border Affairs, Government of Nagaland, Mhathung Yanthan said, It’s indeed a proud moment for Nagaland that Naga Sweet Cucumber has been granted Geographical Indication tag. GI certification will take our indigenous crops to global scale and boost farmer’s income, Yanthan added.

The ‘Sweet Cucumber’ from Mokokchung district, which is a cucumber species not found in any other place is the third Agricultural product which was granted the GI tag from Nagaland.
The other two crops which was granted Geographical Indication (GI) tag, under agricultural products in Nagaland are; Naga Mircha, or “King Chilli” the first to receive the GI tag during April 2008 – March 2009 followed by the “Naga Tree Tomato” which received the GI tag during April 2014 – March 2015.
In the month of July, in a major boost to exports of Geographical Indications (GI) products from Nagaland, a consignment of Naga Mircha or King Chilli, also considered as world’s hottest Chilli based on the Scoville Heat Units (SHUs), sourced from Tening, Peren District, was exported to London for the first time.
In another major boost to GI tagged products, India Postal Department has launched special postal cover on GI tagged products from Nagaland, including the Naga Mircha and Naga Tree Tomato. The special postal covers have been put on display in the Philatelic Museum, New Delhi and copies are also sold all over India.
