IMPHAL,31 July: AT least three personnel of Manipur Police sustained injuries and a police Gypsy vehicle got damaged when a team of Manipur police attempted to pull up some curfew violators at Khurai Heikrumakhong Khomidok area in Imphal East on Friday.
Police have arrested 33 persons in connection with the attack.
According to sources, on July 21, a team of police led by SP Imphal East N Herojit went to Khurai Heikrumakhong area to enforce curfew there. While they were conducting their duty the driver of the SP sustained injury when some curfew violators threw stones towards the police team.
In follow-up action, police managed to pick up two accused persons involved in the incident. Upon interrogation the duo revealed the identity of another three individuals who engaged in pelting the stones. However, the said persons have been absconding since then.Based on a report about the violation of curfew and that the two accused persons involved in past incident stone pelting at the police vehicle were hiding in Khura Heikrumakhong area, a team of police led by Add SP (Ops) M Roni rushed to the spot on Friday morning at around 7 aM and picked up one of the perpetrators.
Following the arrest of the person, some locals gathered in the form of a mob and started attacking the police personnel by pelting stones again. Police also retaliated by firing rounds of tear gas shells. In the incident, three cops sustained injury and a Gypsy jeep allotted to Imphal East OC Commando got damaged.
After getting the informa-tion of the violent repercussions from the civilians, a police team led by SP N Herojit and district magistrate also rushed to the spot.
Later, as many as 33 persons involved in the incident were pulled up and detained at Heingang police station.
Police source informed that the arrested individuals will be interrogated further and those who were found involved in stone pelting at the police personnel will be booked as per law. It appealed to the people not to obstruct the police from performing their duty of enforcing the curfew.
